Gold Souk buying tips
- Check the day's rate on the boards in the souk before you start; every shop uses the same daily reference.
- Ask for the weight and the making charge separately, in writing. The gold value isn't negotiable; the making charge is.
- Look for the karat hallmark stamped on the piece, and keep the itemized receipt.
- Claim back VAT at the airport on eligible purchases from participating shops; ask the shop for a tax-free tag.
- Get there by abra across the Creek from Bur Dubai for the classic approach to Deira's souks.
Frequently asked questions
How is gold priced in Dubai?
By weight and purity. Shops post a daily price per gram for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K gold, set from the international gold price, and add a making charge for the craftsmanship. Plain chains and bangles have low making charges; intricate pieces cost more.
How do I work out the price of 22K gold?
22K gold is 22/24 pure (about 91.7%), so its price per gram is roughly 91.7% of the 24K price; 21K is 87.5% and 18K is 75%. Posted shop rates can differ slightly from this because of rounding and margins.
What making charge should I expect?
By our estimate, roughly AED 15–60 per gram for everyday jewelry and more for designer or hand-made pieces. Making charges are where you can bargain, so ask for the charge separately and compare a few shops.
Do tourists pay VAT on gold in Dubai?
The UAE's VAT is 5%. By our information, jewelry attracts VAT, and tourists can claim a refund at the airport through the tourist refund scheme on eligible purchases from participating shops; investment-grade bars and coins are treated differently.
Is the Dubai Gold Souk a good place to buy gold?
Yes. It's the best-known market, with hundreds of shops in Deira, competitive prices and regulated purity. Compare prices, ask for the weight and making charge in writing, and keep the receipt.
